I took up mindfulness over two years ago. Once I got the basics nailed down, it became a way for me to redefine how my thoughts affected my life. Hopefully, I'll be able to share some of my experiences. I'll try and help you to understand the benefits.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness can mean something slightly different to each person. It exists in many different forms and there are countless variations in practices. But at its core, it provides incredible benefits for those who take it up. It's even backed by research!
Mindfulness is a form of meditation which requires you to focus your full attention on the breath as it enters and leaves your body.
The different types and practices of mindfulness we won't go in to here. That's for you and your mindfulness training. Here's we'll look at the effect that mindfulness can have on your life.
What happens when you practice mindfulness?
Decreased stress 🙇
We've all been there. Whether it's stress at work or in the home, sometimes you can feel overwhelmed. One of the worst aspects of stress was the fact that I didn't even realise the stress levels that my mind had reached.
Mindfulness is a key part of fighting stress. Being mindful teaches you that you are not your thoughts. This is a fundamental theme that we will come back to, but once you understand this concept, you can begin to focus on how the mind works.
From here it becomes easy to separate stress from the idea of yourself. That might sound a bit confusing. But we can vouch for the fact that practising mindfulness can help you to deal with stress.

Mindfulness has certified its place as an effective solution alongside treatment for depression. The practice has been found to actively reduce the symptoms of depression - namely stress and anxiety.
Depression is a serious issue that at the moment we only seem to really deal with once it's diagnosed. Prevention of depression is rarely talked about. Mindfulness can be an effective method of managing and coping with depression.
We live in a world where mental health issues are becoming more common. Especially amongst younger people. There are many complex reasons for this. Our relationships and communities become digital. We're taught to focus and be more self-critical than ever.
In this environment, it's important to be able to understand your thoughts and where they come from. In this way, mindfulness techniques can help deal with depression

Your relationships are important. Human beings are social creatures. Mindfulness helps you to understand the complex relationships that govern our romantic and social lives. It also helps us to be able to take a step back and see how we can focus on altruism and how generosity can bring benefits to ourselves.
We've all been there - doing something nice for somebody is a great feeling. Being mindful allows us to understand what's happening there. It teaches us that to find a purpose sometimes we must define ourselves by what we do to others.
Whether it's becoming a better listener. Or helping to talk about certain problems with ease. There are countless benefits to be found in your relationships by practising mindfulness.
